THE EDITOR, Sir:I AM writing in regards to a letter sent by Ulrich May, entitled "Deport the Haitians", published on February 26, 2004. Ms/Mr. May's point was that since Jamaica is poor, we should not make an effort to help the poor Haitians. S/he stated that since rich United States was deporting them, then we should do the same.
Haitians live in fear because rebels have taken over, and there is no order. Eighty-five per cent of Haitians earn US$3.00 per day, and they suffer from poor health care.
OTHER NATIONS
It is selfish people like you that turn up their noses at the poor and needy, but if misfortune comes your way, you too will want help. Jamaica has been assisted by other nations in our time of crisis, such as, hurricanes and flood. So we should be glad to offer assistance to others, if we can.
If we even take in one Haitian, we would have made all the difference in the world, for that one Haitian. So let us not be selfish and say we cannot help the Haitians, let us try to help them as much as we can. After all, they are our fellow black brothers. If we do not want to help our own, who do you expect to help them.
I am, etc.,
