J'cans have poured into other countries
published: Saturday | February 28, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I STRONGLY feel that Jamaica should open its borders to the Haitians fleeing the strife in their country. It is therefore heartening to see that the government is doing something to help. They are our brothers and sisters and we should not ignore their cry for help in times of distress we would have wanted the same treatment.

After all, Jamaicans have been pouring into other countries in the Caribbean and into the USA by the thousands recently in search of economic independence and to get away from the murderous society the country has become. That is exactly what the Haitians are doing. They are experiencing sustained civil disturbances but we are not; yet the outcomes amount to the same.

WE ARE KIND-HEARTED

Let us show the rest of the world, including our Caribbean neighbours, that we are kind-hearted and loving by not turning them back. Let us show the world that has become so inhumane and selfish that we care and despite our meagre resources, we are willing to stretch what we have in the name of Love.

We will manage despite our limitations and will be blessed for it. Let us therefore support the government on this one, despite their other dismal performance.

I am, etc.,

MICHAEL BROWN
