If not the poor then who ...?
published: Saturday | February 28, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

DEPORT THE Haitians! I beg to differ with the tenuous logic of the letter to the Editor. If Jamaica should not help the poor, then whom should we help? The rich? Those who do not need the help or who can return the favour? Or is there an acceptable or 'sanitised' set of poor to whom we may stretch forth our hands. Name that set I pray.

I believe that the stance of Jamaica is correct in this matter. I believe the more important concern, however, is that within the community of nations, that Jamaica's burden or share of responsibility in Haiti's crisis should not be overwhelmingly disproportionate to its resources.

CARICOM and USA do have a role; but if the immediate neighbour to Haiti closes heart, soul and pocket, then who shall hear Jamaica's cry should misfortune blight us?

I am, etc.,
