Mico awards Guidance and Counselling degrees
published: Wednesday | December 31, 2003

MICO COLLEGE, an affiliate of the University of the West Indies, Mona, has turned out its first cohort of 31 graduates, three with honours, from the Bachelor of Science degree programme in Guidance and Counselling.

The two-year degree programme, is a continuation of the diploma programme in Guidance and Counselling, which was initiated through the insight and persistence of the Guidance and Counselling Division, headed by Mrs. Hermena Davidson.

The degree was "conceptualised as a direct response, to a call from school principals across the island , for highly-trained guidance counsellors, efficiently equipped to deal with the diverse and complex cases that are present in the island's primary and secondary institutions.,"

The college gives credit to its Guidance and Counselling Division, headed by Hermena Davidson, for initiating the advanced programme.

Already, another 28 students are enrolled in the second cohort.

Graduates of this programme are currently employed as counsellors in schools and institutions across the island, while others have been employed as social workers, the release said.

Dr. Deloris Royes-Graham, head of the professional studies unit at Mico, in speaking to the value and significance of this degree programme, said the graduates have been equipped with the knowledge and technology to tackle various problems.

The programme included courses in Juvenile Law, Special Education and Project Management.
