'Pothole-free 2003'?
published: Wednesday | December 31, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS THE year 2003 rolls to a close, I ponder the pompous pronouncement by the Minister of Transport and Works, "Pothole Free by 2003", and I say to myself how typical of politicians. All you need to keep people happy are catchy slogans. The psychological benefit seems to be that people forget their reality and think positively, and keep or put you in power. Words are powerful. Speak the word. Consider the deed done.

Although the people of Bagatelle, Darlow, Rock, Ashley and Green Park have made numerous attempts to get the authorities in Jamaica to assist them in preventing the road from Rock to Ashley from disappearing the only response is that on the 13th of October when residents staged a demonstration, a section of the road received a bit of attention and a sign, "MEN AT WORK" was strategically placed in the area. These men are invisible. Their work is invisible too. The potholes have been undisturbed.

Therefore the only interpretation that we can have of "Pothole free by 2003" is a declaration that potholes are free to be! Why not? They want justice too. So we can expect more in two thousand and four.

I am, etc.,
