Let's save our country
published: Wednesday | December 31, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM a decent law-abiding citizen of Jamaica and I think I have a problem; I am law-abiding. We're now being painted into the corner of desperation at a rapid pace.

That is why those who can run, run; leaving anything and everything behind. That is why we prey on each other; in order to survive. This country has only one problem: corruption. It thrives and trickles downwards. Those who can effect change in this country (aka 'upper circle crew') have a 'I scratch your back you scratch my back' (among other things) policy which bleeds and festers after so much scratching.

Why is it that men with very questionable backgrounds and business ventures can be employed by our 'upper circle crew' so as to rob the country (again and again) of hundreds of millions of our NIS, EDUCATION, INCOME and NHT tax-paying dollars? Scratch scratch.

Don't hold a grudge against the young 20-year-old who zooms past you in a vehicle whose rims don't stop spinning days after he/she's parked it; don't hold a grudge against that couple who's building that 20-bedroom 'house' next door. If you see (and we do see) someone lavishly spending umpteen of millions of dollars in front of the law, unchecked, someone's back is about to fester (scratch-scratch).

If you believe in the 'can't beat them join them' policy then we are doomed. The way things appear to be going, I wonder how long it will be before we're all doomed.

Let's save our country. If you're poor, help your neighbours to smile; if you're not so poor, share with and help those who can only make you smile; if you're scratching a back (or getting scratched), think positively and help us all learn how to fish; for it's the one thing we all have in common, the need and will to survive.

I am, etc.,
