Captain Bligh fancied

DISQUALIFIED: The 4-5 favourite GOINGTOKANSASCITY (right), ridden by champion jockey Trevor Simpson, wins the seventh race over the straight five course in driving finish from AWESOME MINISTER (centre, Larris Allen) and ABUELO (left, Dane Nelson), only to be disqualified and placed third for causing interference and the race awarded to AWESOME MINISTER. - Ian Allen/Staff Photographer

THE 3-Y-O and up open allowance for the Gladiator Trophy over 1400 metres is the principal feature on today's Caymanas Park 10-race programme which commences at noon.

This offers a total purse of $450,000 and will be contested by nine starters.

Also on the card is the 3-y-o and up restricted allowance II for the Flossie McNeil Memorial Cup to be contested by 13 starters over 1200 metres, the field including SUPA LEI, LOOK AT ME, PRIME FURY. XTRA ROYAL and ZAROH-NEY, the leading lights.

Victory will more than likely go to the Philip Feany-trained SUPA LEI, who has been knocking at the door in recent races. The three-year-old chestnut filly failed by a length to catch LADY SHAKEERA in a 1200-metre trophy race on October 4 and followed up with a close second to SQUARE GARDEN over 1300 metres on November 8.

SUPA LEI was in receipt of a hurried ride from the apprentice Oneil Mullings in the latter race, otherwise she would have prevailed in the closing stages.

With a more experienced jockey in Clive Lynch now slated, SUPA LEI has a glorious opportunity of toppling rivals, especially with the distance reduced. She continues to move fluently at exercise and is not too high in the weights (55.5kg) to win from the front running LOOK AT ME, XTRA ROYAL and recent winner PRIME FURY, a lightly raced chestnut filly who has much scope.

Meanwhile, nine starters have been declared for the Gladiator Trophy and from the look of things, it should provide keen competition among YOUNG FOR ALL, CAPTAIN BLIGH, PEACE AND LOVE and Philip Feanny's ECSTATIC who romped the WITRA Distaff over 1800 metres in post to post fashion on November 8 under five-time champion jockey Winston Griffiths.

Although having more to do in present company, ECSTATIC, who again carries topweight of 57.0kg, will make a brave bid from in front. The same is true of Wayne DaCosta's YOUNG FOR ALL, who ran the race of his life in the November 8 Red Stripe Superstakes over 2000 metres when finishing third to PITTACUS at odds of 99-1.

Although his role was basically that of pacemaker for stable-companion and favourite ROYAL RUN in the rich and prestigious Superstakes, YOUNG FOR ALL disputed the lead passing the half mile and was still lying second to PITTACUS a furlong out.

Back in action from the convenient mark of 52.0kg, YOUNG FOR ALL who has been a model of consistency will only go down fighting. He has good pace and will not be inconvenienced by the shorter distance.

Despite all that, a close examination of the form would reveal that the one to beat must be CAPTAIN BLIGH, to be ridden by Shane Ellis for trainer Anthony Nunes, a bang in form combination.

CAPTAIN BLIGH caught the eye when a fast-finishing fourth to 'Horse of the Year' I'MSATISFIED in the November 8 Red Stripe Caribbean Sprint over 1200 metres, a race in which he was beaten only two lengths after turning for home nine lengths seventh, this in the good time of 1:12.2.

Given the additional 200 metres of this race, CAPTAIN BLIGH is going to prove hard to beat with only 51.0kg. He has trained well coming into this race and despite the sound claims of YOUNG FOR ALL and ECSTATIC, the time is right for CAPTAIN BLIGH.

Other firm fancies on the card are BLUE DEBBIE to make amends for her near miss last time out in the 1st race, ISSEY MIYAKE (stepping down, loves the course) in the 4th, WATERS OF MERRIBAH to stave off RED WOOD in the 7th and ZEALOT (stepping down) to beat ROBOCOP, NOWITSKI and CARDINAL LAW in the closing race.
