The plight of security workers
published: Saturday | November 22, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS with great concern that I address the issue of the working conditions of security workers in Jamaica.

These workers have to endure long hours of work with little or no benefits. They do not get vacation or sick leave and this must certainly go against the grain of the Industrial Dispute Act.

They are not allowed to join any established unions as to do so would mean losing their jobs. These conditions cannot go on indefinitely.

I therefore call on the Minister of Labour and Social security to launch an extensive investigation on the plight of security workers. To do less would be an indictment on the working systems in Jamaica.

I am, etc.,

MICHAEL FINDLAY
