A HIGH level of confidence was what took Wolmer's to a 1-0 victory over hosts Ardenne in their Pepsi-Sports Plus Manning Cup football match yesterday.

This according to the team's coach, Vassell Reynolds, who never seemed to let up on his instructions even when it seemed that time was running out.

Ardenne and Wolmer's ended the game with 10 players each and both had the misfortune of a missed penalty but the latter maintained composure and through captain Andrew Fraser got the three points they went for.

"Even after everything we were confident that we would win. That's what we came for. We basically kept the shape of our team and in the second half stepped up the pace a bit. But even as time was running out we knew that we would get at least one goal," Reynolds said.

The win put Wolmer's in a position that sees them as likely qualifiers from Group B for the next round over Ardenne and Jamaica College.

Ardenne and JC both have 16 points after yesterday's round and have only one match to play. Wolmer's meanwhile, currently on 14 points, still have two remaining games with Tarrant and are expected to win. If they do, it will give them 20 points, one more than Ardenne or JC who can only accumulate a maximum of 19 points at this point, assuming they both win.

Yesterday's match at Ardenne meanwhile, was an entertaining 90 minutes despite rain.

Opportunities were abundant for both teams but none could seem to find the back of the net.

The score was 0-0 at half-time but a lot was about to change.

Shortly after the resumption, Wolmer's Dusean Grant and Ardenne's Wilfred Mitchell were both sent off for violent conduct.

With 14 minutes left in the match, Wolmer's got their easiest chance ever via a penalty. Paul Stewart took the shot and missed.

Ardenne got their penalty two minutes later and Nickoli Gage kicked it wide.

Wolmer's continued to attack and with under a minute's play left Fraser made good on a cross from his team-mate Mark Burke.

Said Ardenne's coach Carl Sewell: "Inexperience caused us to lose. It was a good game and we played hard but Wolmer's proved that they wanted the win more."
