Monitoring deportees
published: Tuesday | October 7, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

A VERY simple way to monitor deportees and some of those criminals in Jamaica, is to put on an electronic ankle bracelet on all those who arrive in the country, and establish a data base.

Electronic ankle bracelets have been used in the United States.

In that way, you could effectively monitor their whereabouts quite easily. If there is no law at present to enable this to be done, all that needs to be done is to have one written.

The taxpayers do not have all that money to keep those crooks in jail, feeding them with food that law-abiding citizens cannot afford. I know you will have the do-gooders complaining about human rights, but if they are innocent, they have my sympathy; if they are guilty, that is their choice. They should have thought of the consequences before committing the crimes.

They should also be used to pick up the garbage and clean the clogged drains that cause flooding when a little rain falls. On my last visit to Jamaica, I went to the Coronation Market in Kingston. It was in a terrible state. The taxpayers are supporting the prisoners, they should do something in return.

So many people would like to come home but crime is what is keeping them away. Some do not even want to come on a vacation.

I am, etc.,

J.E. McDONALD
