THE EDITOR, Sir:
MY FRIEND who lives in Canada has a plot of land in St. Catherine. Wanting to pay her dues, she requested a local to pay her property taxes.
The Tax Office issued receipts for payments in the friend's name instead of the owner's. Wanting to eliminate any problems, my friend in Canada sent a cheque in Canadian dollars but this was refused as the wise ones at the Collectorate claims she has no TRN and therefore cannot pay property taxes.
Isn't our country in need of foreign exchange? If the answer to that is yes, then why is payment refused when we all know that it is not a requirement for overseas residents to have a TRN? The government needs to wake up and smell the coffee.
There are several persons (local and overseas) willing to pay their taxes, which they claim are so urgently needed but time and again the powers that be make it that much difficult to pay. These are the things that must be addressed if we must move forward.
I am, etc.,
A CONCERNED CITIZEN
