Whitmore shines on debut

NATIONAL CAPTAIN Theodore Whitmore is currently the rave at Livingston following a dazzling display in his opening game for his new Scottish club.

On Tuesday, Whitmore engineered a 2-0 victory for his Scottish Premier League (SPL) team over English Premier League (EPL) team Fulham in a farewell game for former chief executive Jim Leishman.

In a story carried by the Daily Record with the major headline "Whit a feeling" and a minor one "Livi finds new star as Leish bows out", the 31-year-old Whitmore got a glowing review.

"Leishman, who has quit as chief executive to return to first love Dunfermline, got a rousing ovation before the Almondvale friendly against Fulham ... but debut star Whitmore was the name on everyone's lips after the win over the Premiership side," part of the report read.

His performance was further described as "sparkling".

Whitmore, who set up both goals was all action in the game, according to the report, as with just two minutes on the field he was ripping a left-footer just wide. When not letting fly at goal he was laying off inch-perfect passes for the forward duo of Barry Wilson and Fernando Pasquinelli.

Among those he outshone of the field were Portuguese international Luis Boa Morte, Frenchmen Louis Saha and Steed Malbranque - all ball artistes.

Yesterday there was another report in the same paper with Trinidadian teammate Marvin Andrews heaping praises on Jamaica's "Russell Latapy".

"I've played against Whitmore for my country and he is a very, very good player. We have had a lot of battles in the past.

"On the ball he is unbelievable. He is the Jamaican Russell Latapy," Andrews was said.

Andrews even placed the responsibility of rejuvenating the club, which is seeking to challenge the dominance of Glasgow clubs Rangers and Celtic, on Whtimore.

Said Andrews: "I do believe he's a player who can get Livingston going again.

When he has the ball at his feet you don't know what he is going to do next. He can pass, drive at people and go past defenders."

That performance against Fulham, Andrews said, was "just a little taste of what we will see".

Andrews' only concern about Whitmore was whether or not he could cope with the weather.

Barry McIntosh, who brought Whitmore to Livingston, was more than convinced that the player would continue to make his mark.

"Theodore has more than repaid the belief that I have in him as a player based on his performance," McIntosh said.
