Burrell seeks fourth term
published: Friday | August 8, 2003

THE PRESIDENT of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Captain Horace Burrell, will seek a fourth term when elections are called on November 23.

The extra-ordinary congress at which officers of the federation are elected will be held on Sunday, November 23, at the Starfish Resort in Duncans, Trelawny. Positions being vied for are president, first, second and third vice presidents as well as executive officer.

Burrell, who has held the postion of president since 1994 when he completed the term of then president Heron Dale was re-elected twice and yesterday indicated he will be seeking a third term in office.

"I can tell you that it is my intention to stand for the fourth term," Burrell told The Gleaner.

Asked if he had already chosen his running mates, Burrell responded: "The way the thing is now being organised is different from previous years. Under the new constitiution nominations will be forwarded to the general secretary 60 days before."

Nominations, he said, will no longer be allowed on the floor at the day of the elections. Each candidate will also have to be nominated by at least three parish associations. While the candidates will have to be known at least two months before the elections by the general secretary, the names will be released to the public exactly a month before the elections.

"At this time, I am not aware of any (challengers) as yet but it is a fully democratic sporting organisation. Anyone who is interested could throw their hat in the ring," Burrell said of possible challenges.

"I should hope I have the confidence of my people. It is their choice. The elections are democratic," he continued.

Based on feedback he is getting, Burrell is sure that of the 106 votes to be cast, he will get the majority and be returned to power.

"I will continue to serve my affiliates as long as they ask me to. I will continue to humbly serve and I feel confident that my affiliaties will give me the support to commence a fourth term."

In addition to Burrell, those holding positions to be contested are: first vice president Raymond Anderson, second vice president Lincoln Sutherland and third vice president David Watt.

The postition of executive officer (general secretary) is not an elected one. That person is usually appointed by the executive committee on the recommendation of the president.
