MADREA HYMAN yesterday added a bronze to the Jamaican collection, increasing the country's medal tally to three at the XIV Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The 2001 World Championships finalist Hyman, finished third in the women's 1500m final. She led for 1400m but could not hold off the challenges of Cuba's Adriana Munoz (4:09.57) and Jayne Harrelson of the United States who relegated her to third. However, it was her best ever finish in a top meet.
MEDAL HAUL THREATEN TO RISE
Meanwhile, the country's medal haul at the Games so far is threatening to rise. Today, half-lap sprinters Christopher Williams, Clement Campbell and Danielle Browning will compete in the medal round of that event.
Williams, with a 20.71 seconds winning time in his semi-final, is the third fastest man in the race behind United States Kenny Brokenburr (20.43) and Andre De Silva (20.70). Campbell, second place finisher in his semi-final, goes into the final with the fifth best time - 20.89. Earlier, Campbell (21.00) and Williams (20.90) won their heats.
On the women's side, Browning posted a personal best of 23.21 seconds on her way to qualifying for the today's 5:50 p.m. final of the 200m. In this medal stage she will again face off with the winner of her semi-final, 17-year-old United States sprinting sensation Allison Felix (22.92), Cuba's Doxanna Diaz (22.78), former St. Andrew High student Cydonnie Mothersill (22.89), who is representing the Cayman Islands, and Crystal Cox (23.30). The other Jamaican in the 200m, Judyth Kitson (23.83) failed to make the medal round finishing fifth in semi-final two.
At press time last night, results were not yet available for the men's and women's quarter mile semi-finals. Davian Clarke and Michael Campbell carried the country's flag in the men's event while Michelle Burger and Novlene Williams were the flag bearers in the women's race. They are all expected to be in this evening's finals.
In tennis, the pair of Dustin Brown and Damar Johnson were beaten 6-3, 6-3 by Uruguay's duo of Marcel Feder and Martin Vilasrubi in men's doubles.
In hockey, Jamaica's women's hockey team will have to play off for a minor placing after Uruguay handed them their third consecutive defeat in pool B, thrashing them 5-0.
