THE EDITOR, Sir:
OTTO REICH should be reprimanded for his own lack of diplomacy! His apparent lack of respect for CARICOM opinion is shown in his suggestion that the CARICOM 'bite its lip' instead of speak its mind concerning the war in Iraq.
According to The Gleaner Reich stated in Barbados, "'I would urge CARICOM to study very carefully not only what it says, but the consequences of what it says,' he said, but added that the U.S. would not retaliate directly against its critics."
His suggestion concerning possible trade or financial retaliation is further evidence of his lack of understanding or ability to give due credence to a point of view that might dare to question the Bush administration.
As a student of globalisation in the Caribbean region (who has spent some educational time in Jamaica and Barbados), I can see that Reich is asserting the power of America, when what needs to be asserted is (at least) an attempt toward global understanding. We are all responsible for our interdependent futures.
I am etc.,
