THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM 'shocked and awed' by the current genocide taking place in Iraq. The "sensationalism" being portrayed daily by the U.S. media houses and journalists (all in the hope of acquiring some journalistic award) is beginning to wear thin. This is not a war, it is a deliberate move by the U.S.-led coalition to try and control the oil reserves around the world. If this were a humanitarian venture to liberate the people of Iraq, Mr. Bush would not have tried to bully the U.N., into getting involved in his "war".
Ironically, the U.S. after providing Iraq with Weapons of Mass Destruction initially, turned a blind eye when Iraq used these same weapons against Iran and the Kurds. Where was their "humanitarianism" then? These people cried out and are still crying out for help. The Iraqis are crying now because since Mr. Bush deemed them in need of help, they now have no water, electricity or homes. We all know that Saddam Hussein has committed some major atrocities against the people of Iraq, but these are the same 'oppressed people' who are fighting the U.S.-led coalition and telling them to get out of their country. 'Wake up and smell the coffee, U.S.,' you can't always have it your way. And you can't keep telling everyone else that if they are not with you then they are against you.
We are not all 'mindless minions'. The billions of dollars being 'misused and abused' should be feeding starving people around the world and even in your own country. The diseases without cures (including the current SARS) should be your priority.
When will you stop persecuting people less fortunate than yourself in the name of liberation?
Mr Bush, your children are home, hopefully safe and sound. Stop sacrificing the children of the U.S. for ill-gotten gains.
I am etc.,
