North Coast highway hazards
published: Tuesday | April 8, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I TRAVEL by car to Montego Bay about three times per week. Some times my travel is during the day and sometimes in the dark of night.

This is unbelievable, but it is a fact. The road construction on the North Coast is being done as if the management is on a GO SLOW. There is no continuity in the operations and it has become the norm over there. What they do is not in keeping with the established system of efficiency. These contractors work in an area and do a lot of excavating in preparation for road construction. They then leave it idle for weeks, thus resulting in a nightmare for road users.

These contractors do not believe in DANGER WARNING SIGNS. In some cases they use old pieces of ply board and with paintbrush, clumsily paint on a sign, indicating danger ahead. They have nothing like Reflective Tape, showing "danger" or "caution". Situations like this need proper Reflective Signs and Flashing Red Lights, especially at nights.

To mark off a Lane, they are using huge rocks, about 12-18 inches wide, covering a distance of several hundred yards. You cannot see these properly at nights and when traffic is approaching (at nights), you just cannot see these boulders at all. These contractors just don't care if we ruin our automobiles, injure or kill ourselves. In the meantime, the authorities do nothing about this. Don't we have standards?

Simple common sense should tell these contractors that this is not the way to do things. I am therefore calling on the authorities concerned to do something about this before a disaster occurs.

I am etc.
