Two infants perish in fire
published: Friday | February 21, 2003

TWO INFANTS perished yesterday morning in a fire which razed three houses at Elleslie Pen, Spanish Town, St. Catherine.

Dead are three-year-old Michela Walters and her 17-month-old brother, Howard Jackson.

According to the police, the fire which is of unknown origin, broke out about 3.45. It is reported that the children's mother was awakened by the smell of smoke. She got up to invistage and found that a suitcase full of clothes was on fire in their room.

The police said the woman tried several times to put out the blaze, but it spread and trapped the infants in the room.

Citizens called the Fire Brigade and a fire crew from the Spanish Town Fire Department responded and put out the blaze.

The Constabulary Communication Network says

that since January, seven persons, including five children, have died in fires in different parts of the island.
