Too much complacency
published: Sunday | November 24, 2002

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE decided to become the devil's advocate in relation to just about everything happening in Jamaica.

Even though I am away most of the time, I'm keeping a close watch on things from here, based on what's carried in the press or via the electronic media.

We have become too complacent, too accepting of the mediocrity and the contempt with which we have been treated over the years by those in control. So here goes.

How quickly has the ©overnment responded to putting security measures in place for Gordon House after the November 14 bottle and stone-hurling incident? The measures are to be implemented by December 3. I wish a similar hasty solution could be found for those poor Jamaican families who continue to suffer at the hands of the gunmen.

Then this pay hike for MPs all of 16 per cent and we are only being told after the fact. As if we could do anything about it anyway! When you read the details of the pay hikes they really don't sound outrageously high, especially when converted to pounds but then we read that these figures do not include all the other perks which come with the job and which have not been quantified. For example, everybody who holds any Government position these days, from my observation during a visit, is driving around in a SUV and we know how many millions these vehicles can run you and which the taxpayers are financing. Some of them drive custom-built Volvos and BMWs.

While all these servants are driving past you in their air-conditioned luxury, young people in Jamaica continue to be disillusioned no jobs, no future, increasing crime rates.

We are responsible for putting them there not once, not twice... but....

I am, etc.,

AKILI MALAWEE
