NOMINATIONS ARE now open for the annual Gleaner Honour Awards.
Through these awards, The Gleaner recognises the initiative, courage and accomplishments of an individual or organisation whose contributions by word or deed significantly improved Jamaica's quality of life during the year, or are likely to bring about such a change in the immediate future.
This year's Honour Awards include seven categories from which the "Man of the Year" will be chosen.
The seven categories are sports; entertainment; business; education and public service; science and technology; voluntary service and arts and literature.
Sixteen persons have so far been nominated, a majority of whom have contributed significantly to the public sector, including Dr. Omer Thomas, head of the Bureau of Standards; Professor Errol Miller, chairman of the Electoral Advisory Committee (EAC), for his role in making sure that Jamaica had a free and fair election.
The panel of judges will select the recipients in the various categories including Gleaner Man of the Year and may confer special awards or certificates of merit and may consider persons or organisations not nominated.
Last year's winner was Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford. Nominations from the public close November 29, 2002.
