Crop research programme gets $2.4m

THE CROP Research and Development Programme in the Ministry of Agriculture has received a sum of $2.4 million, as outlined in the 2002/03 Estimates of Expenditure.

This programme, which aims to improve the quality and productivity of a variety of plants and crops, consists of four sub-projects. These include the Field Crops project, established to improve the yields of sweet corn, sweet pepper, tomato and pigeon peas; and the Orchard and Horticultural Crops sub-project, aimed at developing and improving varieties of orchard and horticultural crops as well as pumpkins, scotch bonnet pepper, papaya and lychee.

Also in the 2002/03 Estimate of Expenditure, now before the House, are allocations of $19.6 million to help the citrus industry, $15.8 million for the livestock industry.
