Jamaicans get three-year ganja sentence in Barbados

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP):

A BRIDGETOWN court yesterday sentenced two Jamaican men to three years each in prison for trafficking 9 pounds (4 kilogrammes) of marijuana, police said.

Keith West, 26, of Mandeville, and Mark Brown, 33, of Montego Bay, pleaded guilty in court to trafficking marijuana, police spokesman Desmond Lynton said.

Magistrate Barbara Cooke gave West and Brown the option of paying fines of Bds$50,000 (US$25,000) each instead of serving prison time, but they did not pay.

Richard Clarke, 28, of western Barbados, pleaded innocent in the same case and was freed on Bds$25,000 (US$12,500) bail. The magistrate set a new court date for August 12.

Acting on a tip, police searched and found the drugs Saturday at a house where the three men were staying in Eden Lodge, about 3 miles (5 kilometres) west of the capital, Bridgetown.
