THE SIMPLE, low-tech, public health recommendation of frequent handwashing is apparently still one of the best pieces of advice to prevent
disease.
Researchers, attached to the U.S Naval Health Research Centre, noted a 45 per cent reduction in infirmary visits for respiratory illnesses when naval recruits followed a handwashing programme instituted by the U.S. Navy. In the two-and-half-year study, the recruits were asked to wash their hands at least five times per day. However, while they noticed this decline in respiratory illness when handwashing was adhered to, the researchers admitted that compliance to the programme was challenging for various reasons.
Frequent handwashing is apparently one way to protect your immune system (the body's defence against infectious agents), from invading germs. You can also protect your immune system by eating properly and exercising.
