Wadadah's 'final' hopes fade

By Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

WADADAH'S slim hopes of qualifying for the end-of-round final of the National Premier League faded at Jarrett Park last night after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Waterhouse in a rescheduled game.

The result left Wadadah on 11 points with one game in hand - on Sunday at Harbour View - and with no hope of joining Constant Spring in the final.

Wadadah's coach Anthony 'Follies' Williams described the result as "disappointing, especially in the second half when we had much the better of play".

Williams said he thought before the game that the end-of-round final was a realistic target but was let down by the forwards who have scored just three of their 11 goals this season.

It was a different story on the other bench however as the Waterhouse contingent seemed pleased with the point which took them to nine and seventh place in the 10-team league.

Despite having much the better of play for most of the game, Wadadah missed numerous chances in a game that was hardly lively enough to maintain fan interest for any prolonged period.

Markino Gillings missed the first chance for Wadadah in the sixth minute when his lethargic reaction to a ball played inside by Winston Anglin saw him beaten to the ball by a defender. Anglin had turned nicely and chipped inside the six-yards box to the forward.

Thomas Grant had another good chance inside the 18-yards box in the 30th minute but he was let down by his first touch and gave defender Kirk Martin enough time to clear the ball away from danger.

Waterhouse's best chance came late in the half when a torrid free kick from Kevin Lamey was plucked out of the top right-hand corner of the goal by goalkeeper Keith Wilson.

The bright spot of the second half was a brilliant one-handed save by Wilson from Lamey in the 62nd minute. The forward had gotten behind the Wadadah defence and had enough time to pick his spot. Wilson, who had committed to his right, stuck out a hand and parried the ball to a defender.

Wadadah created numerous chances late in the game and Grant should have scored in time added on but allowed goalkeeper Damion Campbell to smother his close-range shot.
