Westmoreland to honour Local Government workers

By Omar Clarke, Freelance Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

AN AWARDS function to honour delegates who have served and are still serving in the field of Local Government in Westmoreland will be held next Thursday at the Commingle Hotel in Savanna-la-Mar.

Custos of Westmoreland Owen Sinclair will be the guest speaker at the function, the final of many events marking Local Government month.

Local Government month was launched in the parish with a church service at the Ricketts River Holiness Christian Church. In his address to the congregation Custos Sinclair said the church and the Parish Council should be working together for the good of the people as happened in the former years. He appealed for the return of the values such as good order and honesty.

An interesting feature of the observance was the staging of a youth council, a debating forum in which the fifteen Parish Council divisions elected one representative to be a Councillor for a day. One representative was elected as junior mayor to preside over the spirited and wide-ranging debate last week.

The junior councillors also participated in a workshop at the Methodist Church Hall in Savanna-la-Mar. In addition, they attended the regular monthly meeting of the Parish Council at the St. George's Anglican Church Hall on November 8.

The activities also included a fun day with a six-a-side football competition among teams representing the 15 divisions at took place at the Reno football field. Cornwall Mountain emerged winners by beating Llandillo in the finals and Bethel Town was the runner-up.
