THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT IS very disheartening to hear of the continued slaughter and mayhem being brought to bear on so many citizens who live in the inner cities. For too many years charges and counter-charges have been the modus operandi of the major political parties. One of the primary causes of disagreements appear to be the lack of reliable information. A lack of information on anyone's part is sure to lead to biased opinion-based on hearsay, past personal experiences or just badmindedness.
One sure way to counter hearsay or rumour is to present indisputable fact, I suggest the use of video cameras to accompany security personnel including the police officers. Too often, the police reports are said to conflict with that of eyewitness accounts. A camera can surely shed some light here. Perhaps this is being done already. The camera would be a useful way to record events for examination after the fact.
I am sure that it is the wish of the majority of the Jamaican population that the faces and circumstances of those who break the law with impunity, be called to justice for their crimes.
This would restore some peace to the public that those entrusted to uphold the law, are being given the maximum support morally and logistically to be successful in eradicating this scourge from the face of our country.
I cannot agree with Members of Parliament who go on record to say who is firing at whom, knowing they were not there taking part in the activity. We should allow the police to do their job fairly and impartially.
I am etc.,
