THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM in total disagreement with your comments made Sunday, June 17, 2001.
Mr. Patterson's sexual preference is indeed his business. But suppose in truth and fact he was homosexual, how would you tolerate a leader with his sexual orientation contrary to what is right? Would it be irrelevant if Mr. Patterson was sleeping with another man? Would it be insignificant if this ugly manifestation were true?
There are many astute, successful, ambitious homosexuals with the sharpest acumen, but having those qualities does not make it right and we should not be forced to accept it because these people are respected and have made whatever contribution.
Mr. Patterson is in the public eye daily as the Prime Minister, it is only natural for us to be curious about him.
It is good that he has come forward with the truth, but why drag Mr. Seaga down for being responsible for the rumours. It is what the public sees why they quickly adhere to the now false statements, him being unmarried and not frequently coming in public with female companions with whom he may be involved.
People are not stupid. It's about time they stop insulting our intelligence.
I am, etc.,
