Definition of worker

THE EDITOR, Sir:

MY definition of a worker: is an individual who is compensated for his/her services.

People are paid for goods and/or services. Obviously if one is paid and it is not goods - it must be services. I have read and heard of the terminology (working class) I must confess that I do not understand its meaning. Presidents and Prime Ministers are workers, managing directors, through to janitors are workers. Chancellors, vice chancellors and lecturers through to janitors at universities are workers. They are compensated for their services. Therefore, they are workers.

The difference is job classification, and each classification has a job description telling the individual what his/her responsibilities are. In some organisation there's a personnel department, which is commonly referred to as employment department. The personnel of the department are workers. We all know that, that department's main function - a) hire b) train and c) retain.

I am, etc.,
