Hutton's Education Unit salutes all teachers

NEVILLE HUTTON has been teaching for over 10 years. He has taught at various public and private high schools in and around the Corporate Area. In 1995 he decided to develop his professional skills in setting up a private institution to assist students of all ages in developing Mathematics and Reading skills. Through his insight and the dedication of his staff he has opened two facilities to cater to the growing number of people leaving traditional schools without the required CXC passes in Mathematics especially. The programme has developed to encompass extra lessons on various subjects, skills training in computer studies and the teaching of remedial classes in Reading to any age group.

Neville Hutton has an open door policy at his institution. Students and staff are encouraged to talk to him about problems they are experiencing and they both work at coming to an amicable solution. "Sometimes if students are having problems paying their exam fees to the various bodies, CXC and GCE, we will make up the difference for the student." Mr. Hutton went on to add, "we ensure that a lack of financial resources do not hinder the students from sitting an exam they could do well in."

He offers some tips on making Maths Exams easier. When studying he said, "make a timetable, dedicate specific time periods to practising Maths problems." Other tips include:

record all formulas on a tape recorder, this way you can listen to the recording anytime you want

use index cards and carry them everywhere

do group study, interaction with others build your skills and confidence in your abilities

test yourself periodically, to see how well you would do when the real situation arises.

Mr. Hutton has released a new Mathematics book entitled CXC and GCE Maths, which includes notes, questions and answers and special definitions. According to him, "teachers should use interesting and non-traditional methods to arouse students interest in Mathematics and try to combat the fear that so many students have in doing Maths." Hutton's Education Institute salutes all dedicated and hardworking teachers on this Teacher's Day.
