It's not what you say...

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE GOVERNMENT will not endear itself to the electorate if its spokespersons do not measure their words carefully. Too often elected officials seem to forget that they are instruments, not czars.

Junior Minister Fitz Jackson, in a recent Gleaner interview entitled "Govt's new try to reach youths", made the point that "the turnaround will depend on the extent to which the ruling party can educate youths about what Government has done for them". As a young person, I would have been far more receptive of the Junior Minister's statement had it been couched differently. Young people are not beggars in the game, but architects of the future. We need sensitivity, not charity.

Best wishes on your new assignment, Minister.

I am, etc.,

JACKIE A JACKSON
