AWARDS OF Excellence for services to St. Ann were bestowed recently by the St. Ann Chamber of Commerce to four prominent citizens of the parish.
The awards, presented at the Chamber's annual awards banquet on Saturday, July 15, at the Jamaica Grande Hotel, were made to Norma Segree, OD, for education, Norma Jackson, for outstanding citizenship, Frederick March, for tourism, and the firm Econergy Engineering Services, for corporate performance.
Norma Segree, who taught history at the Browns Town Community College and is a former Deputy Director of the Jamaica Library Service, is well known as a community leader in St. Ann who has served education and the library service throughout the parish and at the University of the West Indies.
She is a former Senator and Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, and was a cultural attaché with the Jamaica High Commission in London, and represented Jamaica on the Commonwealth Observer team monitoring the Zimbabwe election in 1980.
Ms. Segree is also a founding member of the Soroptimist Club of Jamaica, and became its first International President in 1973.
The citizenship award was made to Ms. Norma Jackson, well known Ocho Rios pharmacist, for 33 years of contribution to church work, education, and commerce.
Ms. Jackson has helped many children through school, assisted the homeless, and developed her business into the largest pharmacy in Ocho Rios while winning numerous business awards in the pharmaceutical field.
She was also honoured by the Pharmaceutical Society of Jamaica in 1999.
Frederick March, General Manager of the Enchanted Gardens Resort, has been the area chairman for the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association since 1998, and is an executive member of the Ocho Rios Resort Board.
He is known as a dedicated community worker who has managed to direct tourism resources towards the field of community development, and is regarded as one of the best hotel managers in the industry.
The corporate performance award was presented to Eaton and Eunice Haughton, the husband and wife team behind the Econergy Engineering Service firm.
The firm offers a full range of energy services, but the award also took into account the wide range of community services performed by the Haughtons through their membership in the Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs.
The Paul Harris Fellow, the highest international Rotary honour, was earned by Eaton for developing a technical apprenticeship programme in association with the Rotary Club.
The Chamber also honoured three of its members, Iva Walters for introducing the St. Ann Homecoming programme, Clair Williams for contribution to Chamber development, and Rose Douglas, for contribution to Chamber administration.
