Gunman slain in robbery attempt

Corporate Area detectives take a close look at this black Toyota Levin in which one of four gunmen who went on a robbery spree yesterday was shot and killed in White Marl, St. Catherine.

ONE OF four gunmen who went on a robbery spree in the Corporate Area yesterday, using a stolen motor vehicle, was reportedly accidentally killed by one of his own cronies, during a shoot-out with the police in White Marl, St. Catherine.

Up to late yesterday evening the dead man had not yet been identified.

It's reported that the men were travelling in a black Toyota Levin motor car which was reported stolen from its owner at Sunrise Drive, off Red Hills Road, St. Andrew, about 9:00 p.m. Thursday night.

By mid-morning, the car had been used in a robbery in the Molynes Road area of St. Andrew. Hours later, it was again used in a robbery, this time in the Portsmouth's area of St. Catherine.

About 2:45 p.m. yesterday afternoon the men attempted to stage another robbery, but their would be victim turned out to be an off-duty policeman. They attempted to take away his high-powered CBR 600 motor bike.

The policeman signalled to a highway patrol car to stop, from there a shoot-out ensued during which the gunman was shot. He was pronounced dead at the Spanish Town Hospital.

According to the Constabulary Communica-tion Network (CCN) Liaison Officer for South St. Catherine, Corporal Jacqueline Brown, the other three men escaped in the bushes of the White Marl area. Heavily armed policemen combed the area for hours, but were unsuccessful in locating the gunmen.

Yesterday's incident occurred almost a week after three gunmen attempted to rob a Western Union Store on Waltham Park Road and were shot and killed by the police. According to the police, criminals have been involved in more than 1,362 robberies across the island since January. Assistant Commissioner Osbourne Dyer said over 852 robberies were committed in the Corporate Area and 510 in rural Jamaica.
