Rivoli United Football Club of St Catherine defeated former Premier League champions Waterhouse 2-0 in their Digicel Premier League encounter at the Spanish Town Prison Oval on Sunday.
The match, played before a packed pavilion, saw the less fancied homesters taking the game to their more accomplished counterparts, and were duly rewarded in the 20th minute when Barrington Planter beat his marker and scored.
Both teams tried to outplay each other but none were successful at finishing afterwards and the half ended 1-0.
On the resumption, the Rivoli aggregation continued where they left off and made a number of inroads in the Waterhouse defence. However, sound goalkeeping prevented any change in the scoreline until the 88th minute when the league's leading scorer, Devon Hodges, cannoned a ferocious right-foot shot from about 40 yards into the goal, prompting supporters of Waterhouse to make a hasty exit from the venue.
Technical director of Rivoli, Bradley Stewart, said: "We played according to plan and the victory is sweet. What can we say, Hodges is a special player the team is coming into itself now. It really feels good."
Paul Young, Waterhouse's coach, said: "The Rivoli team came more hungry for the win and they played well."
Waterhouse stayed fifth on 34 points, while Rivoli stayed eighth but moved closer to Arnett Gardens (32), as they advanced to 28 points.
