Reigning champions Jamaica suffered their first defeat of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Four-day Championship, going down by 28 runs to lowly placed Leeward Islands at Sabina Park yesterday.
The Jamaicans were sent crashing to defeat following a spectacular bowling performance from former West Indies Under-19 pacer Gavin Tonge, who claimed 7-53, as the hosts, after being set 204 for victory and resuming on 98-4, were bundled out for 175.
Final scores: Leeward Islands 221 and 202, Jamaica 220 and 175.
The 26-year-old Tonge, who took 3-73 in Jamaica's first innings, produced another fine spell of seam bowling early yesterday morning to put Jamaica on the backfoot at 137-9, a position from which they could not recover, despite a gallant 38-run last-wicket stand between leg-spinner Gavin Wallace, who scored 25 not out, and pacer Andrew Richardson, who hit 11.
"The Leewards played better cricket than us, except on the first morning when we had them 27-5. They bowled with purpose and pressured us and we did not cope," said Tamar Lambert, who was losing his first match in 17 outings as Jamaica's captain, dating back to 2005.
"We batted poorly in both innings while they were focused right through. It's hard to accept defeat, but we will just have to take the lessons learnt and take them in the next game against Trinidad where we hope to get it right," he added.
In the 17 unbeaten matches that Lambert has skippered, he won 12 outright and five on first innings.
Steve Liburd, who stepped into the skipper's role for the Leewards after Runako Morton was left out for disciplinary reasons, said: "We came here on a high after defeating the Combined Colleges and Campuses and people wrote us off. But we believed in our ability, backed ourselves and supported each other and, in the end, did what nobody expected us to."
Liburd, whose century rescued the Leewards from 29-5 in the first innings, added: "The effort Gavin Tonge put in this morning really inspired us and changed the course of the game, although as a result of Wallace and Richardson, we had to work a little bit harder towards the end," he added.
Needing another 106 runs with six lower-order wickets in hand, Jamaica started the morning disastrously, losing overnight batsman Xavier Marshall, who added one to his overnight 60, to pacer Wilden Cornwall.
This brought to crease wicketkeeper Keith Hibbert but after facing only two balls, he followed Marshall to the dressing room when he was gobbled up wicketkeeper Thomas off Tonge.
Nikita Miller then came to the crease and with Bernard Jr, added 29 for the sixth wicket but with the score on 134 he was caught off Tonge.
Pumped up and sensing victory, Tonge then dismissed Odean Brown for a one-ball duck with the score on 134 and then had Bernard Jr caught for 44 three runs later.
This left Wallace and Richardson to pull off what would've been an amazing comeback, but after taking the score to 168-9 at lunch, Richardson held out to off-spinner Justin Athanaze.
Jamaica will next face Trinidad and Tobago at Alpart, St Elizabeth, starting on Friday.
