Our land is crying out
Published: Sunday | December 14, 2008
I write this as an open letter to the Jamaica Council of Churches, the Jamaica Association of Evangelicals, and all other church umbrella groups across Jamaica. Our land is crying out; the situation has become beyond crisis proportions. All words to describe the crime situation and the criminal acts have been used and we are now just repeating ourselves; savagery, barbarism, etc, etc, have now become mere platitudes to our ears. I am, therefore, making the following suggestions to our church leaders.
We march and demonstrate for water, roads, light and anything that catches our fancy; we jump and scream "We want justice"! It's time to march against crime and violence, for our children and our future!
We can arrange special days to honour our heroes and heroines. That is good. But why can't we set aside days to fast and pray for our nation? We are tired of it now! Enough is enough! Our children are being kidnapped, raped, murdered, and we take it lightly. Our fine speeches are just not cutting it. Desperate situations need desperate action.
"If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14.)
In the meantime, I petition each church to set aside special times, more than we have been doing before, for prayer and fasting for this terrible monster that is choking the life out of us. I trust this petition will not fall on deaf ears, but we will see some action soon.
I am, etc.,
