The Editor, Sir:I would like to thank the man who if he didn't save my life, surely saved my dignity. My car was in the garage and I was waiting for a route taxi to get to Half-Way Tree. It was late at night and I could wait no longer so I decided to walk from where I was in Mountain View to New Kingston and possibly onward to Half-Way Tree as I had done so often in the past.
I had walked a little distance towards the National Stadium and suddenly found myself face to face with two young men, one of whom was armed with a knife. The one with the knife demanded my wallet. I hesitated. That was all the money I worked for, all my identification, and I was far from home.
Suddenly, I heard somebody shout out, "Dash weh dat." It was a man armed with a handgun. The boys retreated quickly. I stood, unable to move, and the man came over to me. I had the feeling to run, perhaps this might be a gunman. He wasn't. He explained that he was not a police officer nor a soldier, just a concerned citizen.
I hope that God bestows all his blessings on this man and his family.
I am, etc.,
