Bolt, Foster-Hylton for Classics
published: Tuesday | March 4, 2008

( L - R ) Bolt, Foster-Hylton

World Championships silver medallists Usain Bolt and Brigitte Foster-Hylton will headline this weekend's Lucozade Sport/GC Foster College Classics at the college's grounds in Angels, Spanish Town.

Bolt, who was second in the 200m at last summer's World Championships in Osaka, Japan, will run the men's 100m, while Foster-Hylton, a silver and bronze medallist from the Paris and Helsinki World Championships, respectively, will run the 100m hurdles.

The two, along with details of the meet, were announced at yesterday's press launch held at school. The meet, which is also a qualifier for Boys and Girls Championships, is dubbed 'Last Chance' for Champs.

Edwin Murray, vice-president of the college, said the Classics, which started 10 years ago, was formed to serve three reasons.

The first, he said, was to expose GC Foster College's students to top-class officiating; second, to assist other tertiary institutions with an opportunity to work as officials and also to give athletes a last chance to quality for Champs.

Murray said: "We are hoping to provide spectators with a quality meet on Saturday."

Ideal measuring stick

President of the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association, Howard Aris, lauded the institution for its work in track and field.

He also pointed out that the meet provides coaches and athletes with the ideal measuring stick.

"GC Foster College, the number one training centre for sports in the Caribbean, has always sought to do the necessary. I say that because the mandate of the college is teacher/training and for them to be involved so successfully in the competition for track & field events, among other sports."

Jacqueline Jackson, marketing manager at Lucozade Sport, said her company is about its slogan 'Improving Sporting Performance.'

"We are proud to be a part of the GC Foster College Classics again and we are looking forward for great things coming out of Classics this weekend," she said.

Events down to be contested are 100m, 400m, 800m, 70m hurdles, 80m hurdles, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, high jump, long jump, triple jump, discus, shot put, javelin (female only).
