'Legal Corner' turns two
published: Tuesday | March 4, 2008

'Your Legal Corner', an informative talk programme focusing on United States immigration issues, is currently celebrating its second anniversary.

Hosts Dahlia Walker-Huntington, a Jamaican attorney based in South Florida, and local talk radio personality Ronald 'Ronnie' Thwaites have successfully parlayed this highly interactive radio segment into one of the most respected resources for Jamaicans seeking legal advice, both here and abroad.

With so many Jamaicans living in the United States, a 2000 US Census Bureau Report revealed approximately 736,513 Jamaicans living in the States, and many local residents looking to relocate, Communication & Business Solutions Ltd (CBS) Executives Melody Cammock and Corent McDonald recognised the importance of creating a public forum to highlight, discuss and clarify the US legal framework.

Among leading talk shows

Acknowledging the success of 'Your Legal Corner' on South Florida-based radio station WAVS 1170 AM, CBS began looking into making it a staple on local Jamaican radio. After forging a relationship between the programme's hosts and garnering support from Power 106, the local edition was born and first broadcasted as a segment of 'Independent Talk' on February 9, 2006. 'Your Legal Corner' is currently the most listened to hour on Jamaican radio, broadcasting on the island's leading talk radio station, Power 106.

"Digicel is proud to sponsor 'Your Legal Corner' as we believe that it provides a much needed forum for Jamaicans to clarify their challenging legal issues. We believe that the programme is produced very well and, based on the feedback we have received from our customers, Digicel is satisfied that we have made the right decision to continue our association for the years to come," said Wayne Miller, marketing manager-customer at Digicel.

The success of 'Your Legal Corner' is highlighted by the tremendous volume of calls it receives before, during and even long after the programme has ended, while its global appeal is showcased by calls fielded in from Canada, the United States, particularly South Florida and the Tri-State area, England and New Zealand. Future marketing plans for the programme include expanding to additional markets in South Florida and New York, as well as utilising 'town hall meeting' formats and teleconferencing feeds between the US and Jamaica, in order to facilitate greater communication and unite the communities.

In recognition of its second anniversary, 'Your Legal Corner' will be hosting a cocktail reception at the Power 106 headquarters on Thursday, March 6, at 6:30 p.m. Representatives from the programme's primary sponsors, Digicel and Western Union, as well as specially invited guests and friends will all gather to celebrate the show's tremendous success.

'Your Legal Corner' airs Thursday mornings from 8:40 a.m. - 9:10 a.m. during 'Independent Talk' on Power 106, and via live stream at www.go-jamaica.com/power.
