One Love, One Heart
published: Tuesday | March 4, 2008

Bruce Golding

Today, as we join with PALS Jamaica in commemorating Peace Day, we are jolted into facing the sad and stark reality of the escalating crime and violence that besiege our nation's schools; and, therefore, the relevance and importance of such a day as this. The upsurge of violence in our schools is a worrying trend that has emerged over recent years; and successive governments have grappled with this challenge that threatens the security and sanctity of our nation and its people. This Government remains undaunted in its commitment to restoring peace and order, not just in our schools, but throughout our country.

Your theme for this year, Peace for Prosperity, highlights the significance of maintaining peace, in order to secure a prosperous future for Jamaica. We must be reminded of the vision for our National Development Plan, Vision 2030 Jamaica - Jamaica, the place of choice to live, work, raise families, and do business. This can only be achieved, if we foster an environment of peace that will encourage our people to stay and commit to building our country as well as build investor confidence, so attracting that much needed investment.

We can, therefore, see how much our country's future relies on us maintaining an atmosphere of peace and love. However, the Government cannot be the lone 'soldier' in this fight. It will take a collaborative effort on the part of all stakeholders - families, churches, non-governmental organisations and the private sector. I urge us all to join hands and hearts, as a united force; and take back our country from criminal elements, intent on destroying the foundation that was laid by our forefathers.

Remain committed

I laud the sterling work of PALS Jamaica over the last 12 years; and urge the organisation to remain committed to carrying out its mandate of "Peace and Love in Society". I know it seems like an uphill battle, but together we can rescue our country.

I encourage my fellow brothers and sisters to participate in the activities of the Day; but not let today be the only time that you reflect and give thought to the importance of peace. Let it remain with you throughout each and every day of the year. Let us truly have a country of One Love, One Heart.

Prime Minister
