Utility of sting operations
published: Tuesday | March 4, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I read the article about the unregulated wrecker industry and, frankly, I am sick and tired of the police talking about there being no one willing to make official reports so they cannot take action. Mr Editor, what about the police going undercover with sting operations?

The superintendent in charge of traffic said the same thing about the police not being able to take action against traffic examiners selling driver's licences because no one was willing to testify against them.

We pay these people to do their jobs in solving crime, and while it would be ideal if the public assisted them, it is just not good enough for them to say that they cannot succeed because we are not helping them.

I think it is a cop-out (no pun intended) with no one having the will to do what they must do.

Look what happened to the policeman in Montego Bay who recently came out and said he had contrived evidence.

If they can treat their own like that, how can we as citizens expect to be treated when we don't even know whom to trust?

I am, etc.,

GEORGE WATSON
