The Editor, Sir:
The online Gleaner of March 3 and other most recent issues contained many articles high-lighting some positives in the ongoing efforts to recalibrate the civic environment in Jamaica. They were encouraging and inspiring reading.
It was noted however, a recurring tendency to miscalculate the parameters for success or lack of. In the editorial 'Peace will not come in pieces' - the opening statement declared: " We welcome recent data from the police, showing an eight per cent drop in the homicide rate since the start of the year, compared to the same period a year ago ... ." The comparison should be 'apples with apples'. The comparison should be with a recent but similar post-election period. It is common knowledge in Jamaica, that violence tends to spike in an election year. So let us have the figures on the previous post-election year - those should be more revealing.
I am, etc.,
