Jamaican government to 'scale' down overloaded vehicles
published: Saturday | December 8, 2007

The Government has announced plans to resume checking the weight of laden vehicles on the country's road network shortly.

This measure is in a bid to reduce road damage caused by overloaded trucks and trailers, according to Government senator Desmond McKenzie.

Six fixed scales soon

Senator McKenzie told members of the Upper House yesterday that six fixed scales will be installed shortly under the Commercial Vehicle and Safety Weight Limit Enforcement Programme.

The scales will be installed on roads running from Harbour View to Yallahs, Port Maria to Buff Bay, Ironshore to Falmouth, Clarendon Park to Spur Tree, and Central Village to Six Miles in Kingston.

All that remained was for the specific locations for placing the scales to be identified and for them to be imported, Senator McKenzie told the Senate.

The programme is being funded by the Inter-American Development Bank.
