'Dangerous' bridges
published: Saturday | February 10, 2007

Lisia Lynch, Gleaner Writer

HIGHGATE, St. Mary:

Bridges in the parish of St. Mary seem to be a topic on the lips of many residents. The bridge over the Uthrum River that was suggested as being the main factor which caused the massive flooding of Port Maria and adjoining communities late last year, according to Mayor Robert Montague, remains a threat to citizens.

In a presentation at a recent parish council meeting, Mr. Montague affirmed that even though the National Works Agency had promised a plan to adjust the 'deadly bridge', he was yet to hear from them. "What make this bridge a greater hazard now is the fact that we are in February, a rainy month, and the citizens are rightfully concerned as to the effects that this bridge could have on them," he said.

Of grave concern

Another bridge of grave concern is that at Eden Park. This bridge connects the communities of Jacks River and Hamilton Mountain. Mayor Robert Montague said the bridge had sunk three feet six inches and needed serious attention by the relevant authorities.

An additional 'death trap' bridge is one in the district of Pettersfield. This is not only dilapidated, but also serves as a danger to users.
