Kgn not ready for residents
published: Saturday | February 10, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I am tired to hear the moaning of the mayor about Kingston not being ready for Cricket World Cup, but is Kingston ready for its citizens who live and work in the capital?

Here are some problem areas:

1. North and West Parade are replete with cavities filled with dirty and stagnant water and citizens have to wait in these areas for their transport.

2. The extortionists and thieves have turned Harbour Street into a virtual graveyard with buildings locked up and just a few businesses here and there, maybe only the security companies can operate there.

3. On King Street, the pavements are so dirty, I really don't know how these owners can attract customers inside. Can't the mayor invite these owners to clean up their businesses, give them a new coat of paint, especially during Independence and Christmas and decorate the buildings with flags?

4. Can anything be done with the strong able-bodied men occupying the front of the post office on King Street? Maybe they could be used to clean May Pen Cemetery and feed them because that is all they seem to need.

5. Kingston seems to be the only city where motorists can park their vehicles on the street, free of cost, for the whole day, but now touts are at every corner inviting motorists to park, at a price. What about the installation of parking meters?

Mr. Mayor, if you can, with the assistance of the Ministry of Local Government, tackle these issues, the citizens will be behind you 100 per cent and there would be no need to worry about the readiness of Kingston for Cricket World Cup or any other event.

I am, etc.,

A CONCERNED CITIZEN
