Clarke shines at Millrose Games
published: Sunday | February 4, 2007

LERONE CLARKE was the best-placed Jamaican at Friday night's 100th Millrose Games held at Madison Square Gardens, New York.

Clarke finished second in the men's 60m dash in 6.64 seconds while compatriot Steve Mullings (6.67) was fourth. Olympic 200m champion Shawn Crawford (6.56) won the event while veteran Maurice Greene (27.70) tripped and fell.

Jamaican Pete Coley (1:14.05) was third in the men's 600m which was won by Bershawn Jackson of the U.S. (1:11.48).

Women in third place

In the women's 60m dash, Commonwealth Games 100m champion Sheri-Ann Brooks was third in 7.35 seconds. The Jamaican was beaten by Americans Angela Daigle-Bowen (7.25) and Marshevet Hooker (7.32).

Ronetta Smith was also a third-place finisher in the 400m, crossing the line in 55.31 behind Mary Wineberg of the U.S. (54.44) and Hazel Ann Regis of Grenada (55.08).

The shock of the night came when 40-year-old Gail Devers won the hurdles against a stellar field, 19 months after giving birth to a daughter.

Devers edged 2004 Olympic champion Joanna Hayes to win the 60m event in 7.86. Also in the field were Devers' student, Danielle Carruthers, who finished third in 7.94 and former world champion Perdita Felicien, who was fourth in 7.96. Haynes was second in 7.91.
