Burger King interscholastic tournament returns with a bang

THE BURGER King interscholastic high school tournament made a triumphant return to the island's tennis courts as play in the junior divisions climaxed at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre on the weekend.

Chantal Blackwood of The Queen's School claimed the girls' Under-14 title when she battled her way past the Academy's Monique Hanson in a three-set thriller. Blackwood took the first set 6-3, but lost the second 5-7 before managing to edge Hanson 7-4 in a tiebreak final set.

Play in the boys' Under-14 category was not completed and will resume on Friday with two semi-final games. In the first semi-final, Jordan Harris of Wolmer's will take on Romaine Doyle of Campion, while in the other, Campion's Joey Ross will battle schoolmate Randy Phillips.

Under-12 title winners

The boys' Under-12 title went to Simon Levy of Hillel Prep who defeated Duncan Reid of Campion 7-5, 6-3. En route to the final Levy also got by Ramon Mitchell of Siloah 8-1 and Jamaica College's Noah Stewart and Stefan Martin. In girls' Under-12 play, Ocho Rios's Michael Denton of Marjam Prep defeated Suwan Satahoo of Woodlands Primary by an 8-1 margin.

In the boys' Under-10 category, which was played on a round-robin basis, Simon Ho-on of Sts. Peter and Paul won all his games to lift the title. Ho-on had victories over Kevin Rodgers, Jovaun Hussey, Jordan Law and Ravion Fray.

In the girls' Under-10 division, Rommel Green of United Learning Centre in St. Ann won all her matches defeating Melissa Martin, Ariel Silvera and Vanessa Nugent.
