COUVA, Trinidad (CMC):
OFF-SPINNER Amit Jaggernauth grabbed a five-wicket haul as Trinidad and Tobago wrapped up a comfortable 185-run win over the Leewards Islands before lunch on the fourth and final day of their Carib Beer Series match yesterday.
Playing at the National Cricket Centre, the 23-year-old Jaggernauth claimed five for 48 to send the Leewards crashing from their overnight position of 118 for four to 187 all out, allowing the hosts to grab their first win of the tournament.
The Leewards' batsmen capitulated meekly to the spin and pace attack employed by captain Daren Ganga and only Wilden Cornwall
(36), wicketkeeper/batsman Jason Williams (27) and Tonito Willett (21) showed any resistance.
Further trouble
Cornwall and Willett resumed for the Leewards and carried the score to 129 before the right-handed Cornwall was trapped in front by medium pacer Richard Kelly (2-44).
The visitors slipped further into trouble at 145 for six when Willett was caught by Man-of-the-Match Kieron Pollard at slip off Jaggernauth.
Jaggernauth and left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed, who claimed two for 50, then finished off the tail.
T&T formalised victory when
former West Indies fast bowler Adam Sanford was caught by close-in
fielder Darren Bravo off Dave Mohammed, without scoring. The win was the first for T&T in this year's Carib Beer Series, and it catapulted the twin-island republic back into contention for championship honours. They now have 20 points.
