Angry at naming of marina
published: Wednesday | January 24, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I am from Port Antonio, and I am angry that the new marina has been given the name of The Errol Flynn Marina. It even has his picture. That I believe is a slap in the face to Port Antonians, our national heroes, and Jamaicans on a whole. What an insult! Who is Errol Flynn to Jamaica and Port Antonio? Nobody.

A wealthy American actor who has bought up a good portion of eastern Portland's farming and coastal land, keeping Portland and its young people from expanding into the agriculture arena. He has done nothing for Jamaica, and definitely has done nothing for Port Antonio.

For his name to be put on our national wharf is an offensive, disgraceful and a contemptible act. The people of Port Antonio did not even have a part in naming this important wharf which is in the centre of our town. I, and others I'm sure, would like to see his name off immediately, and it named for Paul Bogle, or Marcus Garvey, or Nanny of the Maroons - important national heroes, who sacrificed for Jamaica.

I am, etc.,

Voice against Ja's deterioration!
