B'dos under pressure
published: Saturday | January 13, 2007

CRAB HILL, Barbados (CMC):

Blessed with favourable conditions, Leeward Islands gave a workmanlike opening day performance to restrict Barbados' batting in their second round match of the Carib Beer Series yesterday.

Sent in to bat in overcast and windy conditions, Barbados reached 250 for nine when stumps were drawn on the opening day of the match at the North Stars Cultural & Social Club.

Several of Barbados' batsmen got starts, but their captain Ryan Hinds was the only one to past 50. He hit seven fours and one six in a top score of 82 off 214 balls in 4-1/4 hours.

Dwayne Smith scored 43, Floyd Reifer made 28, Ryan Austin got 26, and Wayne Blackman gathered 20.

Tonito Willett and Adam Sanford were the most successful Leewards bowlers with two wickets apiece.

Barbados made one change to their line-up, bringing off-spin bowler Austin into their 11 for Kirk Edwards.

Leewards had three changes, with Javier Liburd, Athanaze, and Jeremy replacing Austin Richards, Jr., Runako Morton, and Gavin Tonge.

Barbados entered the match at the top of the standings with 12 points, following a three-wicket win in their opening match against Trinidad & Tobago at this venue.

Leewards are second in the standings with six points, after taking first innings points in their drawn opening match against Jamaica in St. Kitts.
