Alleged homosexual attacked at UWI
published: Wednesday | April 5, 2006

Andrew Wildes, Gleaner Writer

AN UGLY incident, allegedly sparked by a man who made homosexual advances on a student, took place yesterday evening at the University of the West Indies' Mona campus.

It took a contingent of police, dressed in riot gear, to bring stability to the campus as angry students chased the alleged 'guilty' party to the entrance of Taylor Hall.

As the police attempted to lead the man away, they were greeted with missiles hurled from every angle by the students.

An officer fired several shots into the air, forcing the group to disperse.

It is alleged that the man made sexual advances on a male in a bathroom at the campus.

STUDENTS GIVE CHASE

His advances were unwelcome and a fight ensued. The man then ran but, as word quickly spread about what took place, a horde of students gave chase.

The alleged homosexual was cornered at Taylor Hall where he begged the security guards for help. The enraged mob subsequently demanded that the guards turn him over.

"A wha' dem a do? (Dem) man fi dead!" one student shouted.

The campus security were at the mercy of the angry group. As they pleaded with the students to disperse they were verbally abused and bags of water thrown at them.

The crowd continued to grow angrier, even when Damion Crawford, past guild president, addressed them. He was forced to duck from the missiles.

At one stage, a young man attacked the accused man with a knife. The police, however, said he was not injured. He was transported to the Papine Police Station.
